Don't think you treat breast cancer patients? Think again!
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Life expectancy is increasing & unfortunately so are cancer rates; this means rehab practitioners are more likely to treat these patients, but skimming over a past medical history of breast cancer would be a mistake.
Medical interventions for breast cancer often have long-term implications such as skin & tissue changes, increased risk for lymphedema, cardiotoxicity, osteopenia/porosis, fall risk, and cancer recurrence. You need to know if your treatment interventions such as manual therapy, exercise, and modalities are putting your patient and your license/practice at risk.
I created this affordable clinical reference guide for rehab practitioners. I understand that you might not want to invest in a continuing education course to get this information so I distilled down the 'need to know' information in this 38-page PDF. Just save it to your computer and reference at will.
If you have clinical questions, feel free to ask in the 'Pelvic Health & Breast Cancer Rehab Specialists' Facebook group. Thanks for going the necessary extra mile for your patients.
Please note, this resource will not prepare rehab clinicians to treat people who have/had breast cancer. The purpose of this PDF is a clinical tool rehab clinicians can reference regarding precautions and contraindications for applying therapeutic interventions with people who have/had breast cancer. I sometimes receive emails from practitioners asking about when and if it is safe to do ‘X’ with a breast cancer patient; this reference tool was created to help clinicians navigate these questions. If you would like to take a course which will prepare you to treat breast cancer patients, please see the course "Breast Cancer Rehabilitation; Comprehensive Evaluation & Treatment."
36-page quick clinical reference of precautions & contraindications for rehab providers treating patients with h/o breast cancer.
